Kynapse

February 16th, 2008

Kynapse is a middleware solution used by Game Developers for 3D Pathfinding and AI. It is based on “Agents” architecture thus I thought it was of some interest to readers. I never used Kynapse myself but a colleage of mine that shipped Lord Of the Rings Online seems to think very highly of it. What is interesting there are some games here on my shelf that employed it, like Crackdown xbox 360.

Quad Core Versus Dual Core

February 4th, 2008

Stumbled on a great article on this topic that provided rare insight into Dual Core versus Quad Core. What will suprise some readers is that Quad Core wins the shootout due to its larger L2 cache. I remember back when we were on porting over Unreal to the Playstation 2 one of the engineers on the project and I got into a discussion about SIMD/VU optimizations. I remember we decided the focus should be on cache optimization (I thnk I even discussed it a bit in my Software Skinning tutorial). Very cool to get a deja vu while reading this article

So games that are even not optimized for quad cores are still experiencing speed increases. This article is much more indepth that you’ll find at most places. Off hand, I’d like to add Quad core is of course great for runnning game servers to play with friends, game development, creating media using software like Sony Vegas Studio, etc. I wouldnt be suprised if FRAPS got a boost from Quad cores.

3DV’s Depth Sensing Camera

January 1st, 2008

3DV’s new Depth Sensing Camera looks like it will an amazing device. Unlike regular digital cameras, this one can  perceive depth information and relay this data to computer software. I can imagine a lot of cool applications for this device. I will make sure to check this little gadget out. They say the price will be competitive with web cameras and they expect to market at regular retail stores like Best Buy, etc. Sweet… Visit their home site for more information. Unfortunately, right now the product is not out yet but I hope it becomes available shortly. In their gallery section they even have videos of a human face being captured in full 3d in realtime. This technology has a lot of incredible potential for both 3D and Gaming applications.
